Name Meaning: The name “Jagakarya” comes from the Sanskrit word “jaga,” meaning “to guard,” and the Kawi word “karya,” meaning “duty” or “work.” Philosophically, they are soldiers tasked with ensuring the smooth and safe running of all government work and affairs.
Historical Duties: In the past, they were tasked with maintaining security and the running of government within the kingdom.
Uniforms and Attributes:
Clothing: They wear a shirt and trousers with a lurik pattern.
Hat: They wear a black hat called the Sigar Jangkang, which resembles a pair of wings on the left and right sides.
Flag (Klebet): Their banner is called Papasan, rectangular with a red background and a green circle in the center.
Musical Instruments (Accompaniment): During parades or traditional ceremonies such as Garebeg, they are accompanied by a special song (march) called Gendhing Slagundhi.
The Jagakarya Brigade ranks fourth in the Keraton (Palace) troop procession, after the Patangpuluh Brigade. Today, their primary function is to guard culture during traditional ceremonies.
